Using my techniques Sandra was able to develop a plan that worked very well for her son.

My son is 2 ˝. I had tried to potty train him in the summer after his 2nd birthday, but had no success at it. He loved wearing underwear, but he kept having accidents. I felt like I was just following him around with a bottle of carpet cleaner. LOL. I decided I needed to learn more because I obviously wasn’t doing it right.

We are no longer allowed to call him our baby, because he quickly reminds us that he is in his “big boy underwear.” I never realized how much he hated diapers. It was a great motivator to keep him using the potty. He never refused to go and try so that he could keep his “big boy underwear.”

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you. As a first time mom your site and your experience was greatly appreciated. I didn’t like the conflicting advice I was getting from friends and relatives, but your book allowed me to make a plan based on the strengths of my son.

Hi Johanne,

A couple of weeks ago I wrote to you with regard to the Potty Trainer Manual and whether your method would work on my son Justin (3-1/2 yrs old and a long medical history due to which he has a delayed development and wasn't potty trained yet - wouldn't use the potty or toilet).

After due consideration, we decided to order the manual as Justin had to be potty trained some time and we had nothing to loose. Also, even though Justin would not use a potty or the toilet, Justin showed very good bowel control and therefore in our opinion was ready to be potty trained.

I started with buying cheap nappies. I had always bought the very best (most expensive) nappies, thinking that I was doing Justin a favor. I was clearly wrong as I was only putting him in a comfort zone. Justin was clearly not impressed by the cheap nappies.

As starting date, I choose Saturday 2nd October (noon as Justin had therapy sessions in the morning). The Saturday was not easy, the Sunday was difficult, the Monday was hard, Tuesday was frustrating and on Wednesday, Justin was potty trained as far as his wee was concerned. A major milestone.
After 5 days from starting date, Justin refused a nappy at night. Even while sleeping, he was holding on tight to his pajama-pants due to which I was unable to put a nappy on. We have had the occasional accident but since then, Justin has seen many (most) nights dry.


After the initial week at home, Justin went back to school. School was most impressed with Justin's potty training, couldn't really believe what had been achieved in such a short period of time. Since going back to school, so far Justin has not had one accident at school! After having been at school for 3 days (13 / 14 days into the potty training), Justin got his bowel movement sorted out and properly uses the toilet.
Since then, Justin had just moved forward. It has been 3 weeks since we started the potty training and Justin is (except for the occasional accident that he experienced at night) fully potty trained! Most of the times, he goes to the toilet without being told do to so. When going out, he has no problem using a 'strange' toilet.
It is an absolute pleasure and we are so proud of our little boy!

Another thing worthwhile mentioning. Justin receives speech therapy and we were told by Justin's speech therapist (a real expert in her field, not just 'any' speech therapist) that we should not even bother with trying to potty train Justin as according to her 'it is impossible to potty train a child before it is able to produce some form of verbal communication'.
Did Justin proof her wrong! He is a very intelligent little boy, even although he only produces pre-verbal speech. His speech therapist is totally amazed and - so to say - completely speechless!

Hence this e-mail to you. If you were ever to get queries in from people who have a child who is not an 'average' child, this child can be potty trained. And with luck, even in a short period of time, like happened to Justin.

Hi.

I have been meaning to write this for a while.  My summer nanny was going back to college, my babysitter had been on maternity leave.  At the last minute, my regular sitter quit and I had to enroll my 3 year old son in all-day preschool so I could go to work.  He was not trained,

and I was having a horrible time with him, it was like he didn't even know what the potty was for.

I bought your book and started reading it.  The first Friday of the first week of school, my son got "expelled" from preschool, I was trying to pass him off as potty trained and he was not, it was obvious!  I was extremely skeptical about your method, as I know my child, it's hard to make him sit on the potty even for a few seconds.  He won't just sit there.  But I begged the preschool director to give me the weekend (it was a three day weekend) and also I could use a sitter for a week if necessary, I figured that would give me enough time, but the sitter was expensive so it couldn't go on any longer than that.

Well let me tell you - I followed your book to the letter. 

This went on all of Friday evening (from 5:00 till bedtime) and then we resumed when he woke up in the morning.

At 11:00 the next morning, on one of our bathroom trips He said, very matter of factly, "Oh, I did it mommy."

That was it.  No looking back.  He figured out the poop part of it the next morning.

He has never worn a pullup to bed, and I would say maybe, MAYBE, he had one night-time accident the first night, but it was actually very early in the morning and he caught himself in the middle of it and ran to the bathroom.

That was it.  No looking back.  No accidents.  Eventually he started standing up to pee, but that was something we weren't concerned with at all.

On that Tuesday, we proudly walked into the classroom and he showed his teachers what he could do.

It took just under 18 hours (most of that time he was asleep!) to go from not even knowing what the potty was for to being completely, 100% potty trained.

By the way, I have two older children, girls, who were both potty trained by the time they were 2 and a couple of months old, but they were just the kind of kids who showed interest and took the initiative.

This guy had no initiative.  But wow, when we put your method to the test, we were pleasantly, PLEASANTLY surprised!
